Kelly Schalk

Kelly Schalk / Detroit 10.4.19

There are many reasons that I am so excited for the opportunity to dance for this fundraiser. My goal is to raise enough money to support at least 3 women in their fight for their lives. But perhaps even more than that, I hope that by hearing my story or seeing me dance, that I can inspire my warrior sisters to know that perhaps they, too, will feel the best they’ve ever felt after all the fighting is over - and that through all the things we lose along the way to beating cancer, we have more to gain than we could ever imagine.

About Kelly Schalk

Shortly after my diagnosis of stage 3 breast cancer, I sat with my oncologist as he explained my treatment plan, telling me that yes, I was going to lose my hair... and that I was going to GAIN weight. Really?! Not only do I have cancer, but now I get to be bald AND fat?! How is THAT fair?

Well he wasn’t lying. I gained over 20 lbs during treatment, and I also lost my job, I lost all of my hair, I lost most of my physical strength, and I lost my breasts. But the one thing I never lost was my smile.

With the help I received from The Pink Fund, along with all the love & support from friends & family (extra shout out to my Mom!), I was able to focus on fighting cancer & on healing my body instead of worrying about how I was going to be able to survive.

Now, 2 years later, I feel more alive than I can ever remember feeling before my diagnosis. I don’t think I could have ever known it was possible to feel like this, even if anyone would have tried to tell me. I have my ups & downs, of course - dealing with cancer takes its toll on you physically and maybe even more so emotionally. But as your body begins to rebuild itself after treatment has taken so much out of you, you begin to feel this amazing spark growing inside of you as you come back to life again, and I remember being in awe of that feeling as it grew stronger and stronger, day after day. Today, I spend every morning dancing to the radio as I get ready for work - that’s how good I feel!
